Hangul: The Korean Alphabet (Vowels)
I started studying Hangul casually a few months ago when I decided to begin learning Korean. Now that I’m taking classes, it’s time to get serious. With my instructor, I have now covered all of the vowels, which are a bit different than English. The vowels are as follows:
ᅡ - a - as in father
ᅣ - ya - as in yard
ᅥ - eo - as in uh-oh
ᅧ - yeo - as in yonder
ᅩ - o - as in home
ᅭ - yo - as in yoga
ᅮ - u - as in boo
ᅲ - yu - as in you
ᅳ - eu - as in pull (this is a bit tricky since there isn’t an English equivalent to this sound.
ᅵ - i - as in feet
ᅢ - ae - as in care
ᅤ - yae - as in yankie
ᅦ - e - as in met
ᅨ - ye - as in yes
ᅪ - wa - as in wine
ᅫ - wae - as in wait
ᅬ - oe - as in wet
ᅯ - weo - as in wonder
ᅰ - we - as in when
ᅱ - wi - as in we
ᅴ - ui - as in pull followed by feet (this is the tricky one, just do ᅳ and transition into the ᅵ sound quickly)
So far I’ve gotten the hang of these but I have trouble producing the different sounds for ᅥ, ᅩ and ᅮ without thinking really hard about it.
