Introducing Yourself in Korean
Last week we covered Korean Greetings, which is a great starting point for learning how to introduce yourself. You don’t want to just say 안녕하세요 (Annyeonghaseyo) to someone and sit there in awkward silence! You want to be able to inquire about the background of the person you are conversing with and be able to answer their questions.
In Korean culture, it’s not atypical to ask someone...

Blueberry Cobbler
The other night I had the idea to make a blueberry pie/cobbler with some leftover pie crust. So, I started scouring the web for recipes and came across one with a homemade crust that was easy to whip up on the Chocolate & Carrots blog [Individual Blueberry Cobblers]. I cut the recipe and made a few changes to suit our needs. The final result wasn’t as good looking as the cobblers on the...
You would think there would be a cure for old versions of IE by now.
Why can’t every computer just use the same character encoding?

Korean Greetings
Alphabets… boring! Grammar… snooze! I finally got to jump into some conversation on Friday with my instructor. We covered some of the basic greetings and the concepts of conveying respect in the vocabulary used. In Korean culture, respect is very important and you would never use certain language with your elders, teachers, etc that you would use with your friends or people younger...

Korean Grammar Lesson 1
I had my first grammar lesson on Friday covering the formation of syllables in Korean. Without covering these rules, a typical English speaker would consider 물 (water) a single letter. However, upon further inspection, if you have covered the Hangul in my previous posts, you will see that particular example is made up of three letters. This block of letters is a single syllable. Let’s take a...

Hangul: The Korean Alphabet (Consonants)
On Wednesday my instructor and I covered hangul vowels. On Friday, we jumped right into consonants, some basic grammar and conversation (both covered in two other posts). Below is a list of the Hangul consonants along with pronunciation. Of course, there isn’t an exact translation between Korean and English so you might want to find a Korean speaker or browse YouTube so you can hear the...

Hangul: The Korean Alphabet (Vowels)
I started studying Hangul casually a few months ago when I decided to begin learning Korean. Now that I’m taking classes, it’s time to get serious. With my instructor, I have now covered all of the vowels, which are a bit different than English. The vowels are as follows:
ᅡ - a - as in father
ᅣ - ya - as in yard
ᅥ - eo - as in uh-oh
ᅧ - yeo - as in yonder
ᅩ - o - as in home
ᅭ -...

Learning Korean
I’m using this space to chronicle my Korean language education. I’ve been interested in picking up a language for quite a while now. I started out learning French in high school but at the time, I didn’t realize the benefits of learning a language. What changed my mind was a trip to Guatemala over spring break when I was in college. My interest in travel and communicating with people whose...
